National Tour is Underway
The 2010 Hydro-Turf APBA National Tour got underway this past weekend in Parker, Arizona and everyone in attendance was greeted with perfect racing weather.
With the season getting started, Slippery representatives were on hand to support the tour and Slippery riders like Craig Warner and Peter Zernik. Both Warner and Zernik charged to podium finishes throughout the weekend in various classes and have set the stage for what should be a highly competitive series.
Emi Kanamori flew the Slippery flag high in the women's class as she posted a 1st place overall finish in the Pro-Am Women Ski Ltd class with wins in both the first and second moto.
As a continuing sign of support Slippery is offering a special sponsorship to the upcoming National Tour stop in Myrtle Beach, S.C. At that event on June 5th-6th, 2010 riders in the 13-15 Junior class will be competing for an exclusive giveaway opportunity courtesy of Slippery. If a rider in the 13-15 Junior class can win three out of the four motos over the weekend, they will win the Slippery trifecta giveaway. The winning rider will be awarded a Slippery suit, vest and helmet.
Just like the 2010 season, there are some exciting things to come from Slippery throughout the spring and summer. Slippery will be on hand during National Tour stops, and plans are in the works to host an event later this summer. 2009 World Finals - Lake Havasu
Slippery Wetsuits Invades the IJSBA World Jet Ski Finals
Slippery Wetsuits has been a major player within the jet ski racing and personal watercraft world. During the season-ending week of competition for 2009 in Lake Havasu, Ariz., the brand served notice to the industry that it still makes some of the best wetsuits on the water and is a key supporter of the sport with an impressive display through the help of Parts Unlimited.
The IJSBA World Jet Ski Finals was a week-long event from October 11-18 full of action-packed racing, stunt shows and a fun-loving atmosphere in what is one of the most tight-knit racing communities in the world.
IJSBA legend and Slippery brand representative Victor Sheldon along with brand manager Dave Gowland were on hand to help showcase the amount of dealer as well as racer support Slippery has for 2009 and beyond and how the relationship with Parts Unlimited will help push the brand to the forefront of the industry.
"We really want to show everyone here our commitment to the sport," said Sheldon. "We offer the highest-quality wetsuits and this is our chance to put our product on display and be proud to be a part of such a great industry. I think that thanks to my success, my affiliation with Slippery gives it an instant notoriety and now teaming up with Parts, it should make it one of the most recognizable brands out there."
Beautiful Lake Havasu has served as the site of the World Finals for over a decade.
With the help of Parts Unlimited, Slippery provided a massive display full of its latest and greatest products and provided a strong presence within the pits.
Slippery star Steven Dauliach brought home a runner-up finish in the Pro Ski class, leading the way for all the male Slippery-backed competitors.
Jet ski veteran Minoru Kanamori took a break from his full-time duties at Kawasaki to take part in the action in Havasu, posting an impressive third place finish in the Pro-Am Ski class.
Kanamori's wife Emi is a competitive racer herself and showed she has some serious speed by bringing home second in the Pro-Am Women Ski final. The pair's passion for racing makes them a fan favorite.
As part of their commitment to the sport and its future, Slippery and Parts Unlimited hosted barbecue for all the IJSBA junior competitors.
In the first moto, Craig Warner showed why he holds the #1 on his Kawasaki, but problems in the second moto relegated him to a 12th-place finish and sixth overall in the Pro Runabout class.
The Slippery Wetsuits truck will be a permanent fixture at the track and is a sign of the dedication and success the brand achieves both in the water and out.
After eight days of intense racing, the sun set on yet another IJSBA season. With a solid rider lineup and cutting-edge products, look for Slippery Wetsuits to come back stronger than ever in 2010.
Rider Profiles
RANDY LAINE
Randy Laine has gone from teen-aged surfer chasing the perfect wave to a water sports Hall of Fame member whose legacy includes the creation of numerous aerial maneuvers and a pioneering role in tow-in surfing. Laine, 57, who's known as "the father of freeride," has spent most of his life in Carlsbad, Calif., one of the meccas of surfing. He witnessed the birth of the Jet Ski and was the first to use one to tow surfers into the waves. He said that method allowed the rider to use "a short board on a big wave" and have the maneuverability the bigger boards lacked.
Laine was one of the first to use a "leash" on his board and invented many of the tricks still used in competition, an endeavor that contributed to many of his dozen broken bones and torn ligaments in both knees. The trick he may be most remembered for is the Superman ("You either land it or you get free dental work," he said, and he has lost four molars), and the thing he'd prefer people don't remember is his photo layout in Playgirl magazine in the 1970s. "I was just hoping my mother wouldn't find out. She did. Everybody did," Laine said in an article by Wendy Hinman in the May, 2007, issue of Carlsbad magazine. "It was the most embarrassing thing I've ever done."
'PANCAKE PETE' SCHEIDT
Pete Scheidt is a conservative-looking civil engineering designer who lives in Toms River, N.J., with wife Kelly and enjoys snowboarding and riding dirt bikes in his spare time. But when he loads up his Jet Ski and heads for the Jersey Shore to practice no-handed barrel rolls and backflips he morphs into "Pancake Pete," one of the leading freeride professionals in the country. Scheidt, 31, who lists Pat Bogart, Randy Laine and Ross Champion among the people who've inspired him, said he tried his first stand-up Jet Ski in the early 1990s and finally bought one in 2000. Shortly thereafter he acquired his nickname.
"I was learning backflips on a basically stock ski with footholds," he said. "I kept on landing upside down and a buddy said 'man, you're pancaking those flips.' I threw a couple more learning them and they said, 'what are you, Pancake Pete? Lots of luck.' So I kept it, and then ended up over-rotating tricks and getting pancaked anyway. I pancake stuff all the time. But now I land most of them."
"TYPHOON TOMMY' NUTTALL
Tommy Nuttall is a high school wrestling and track coach, a Jet Ski competitor, a stunt coordinator and producer, an actor, and an entertainment producer, announcer and performer, so it's little wonder that he answers to the name "Typhoon Tommy." He has to have the energy of a tropical cyclone simply to keep up with all his activities.
The managing director of Typhoon Talent and Entertainment and the World Freestyle Watercraft Alliance Jet Ski stunt team, Nuttall organizes and produces freestyle Jet Ski events, water shows, skating shows, board and bike shows and the occasional mixed martial arts exhibitions. He competes in most of the Jet Ski and water shows, too, displaying a mastery of all types of personal watercraft and his ability to ride two watercraft at the same time, and when he's not riding he's also the event announcer. Nuttall, who lives in the Detroit, Mich., area, works with a group of performers that includes his wife, "Rambo Rosie" Nuttall, and eight-time world champion Eric Malone. Nuttall is one of the top Runabout freestylists in the world.
STEVEN DAULIACH
Steven Dauliach of France, the perennial European Jet Ski champion, is in his second season as manager and leader of the Dubai Jet Ski Racing Team and in early June won the Corsica round of the World Championships. Dauliach, who won the French national championship as a 14-year-old in 1995 with seven wins and a second in eight rounds of competition, started his own team in 2007 after a subpar season in 2006.
After establishing himself as one of Europe's top riders, Dauliach migrated to the U.S. in 2001. Riding for Kawasaki, he won back-to-back World and European Championships in 2003 and 2004. Dauliach returned to Europe in 2005 and won a third straight European title and was the Indoor World Champion in 2006 before forming his own team. Dauliach, 28, is married and a follower of Buddhism.
VICTOR SHELDON
Victor Sheldon says with a laugh that "champions are born, not made" and he might be right. What else can explain a kid born and raised in Alaska who's known as "The Slasher" becoming an eight-time world and national Jet Ski champion? Sheldon says his success came simply because "I was meant to race; it didn't matter where I came from."
The nickname came from Scott Burnsworth, who gave it to him because at the time everybody had to have one, and Sheldon said he didn't care for it originally. But it became more acceptable as he began winning championships - in Stock, Pro and Expert Ski and Pro Runabout - and gaining recognition for his exploits.
Sheldon, 42, who moved to Vista, Calif., in 1988, is the Rider Manager for Thor Motocross, but what he most likes to be called these days is husband and father. He and Piper were married in 2003 and have two young children, Peyton and Chandler, and on Mother's Day this year he found a way to combine all the elements of his life. He competed in a Jet Ski race for the first time in four years because Piper wanted to watch him. "I finished decent, but did not win," he said
